Two of his videos, one of which was made when he was only 14, went viral on Facebook accumulating a total of 6 million views. Along with his growing social following online, he began performing all around New England, establishing his live show amongst some known artists. By age 16, Token had won multiple online rap contests and has amassed over a million views on his YouTube page. Rather than hanging out with friends as most kids his age were doing, Ben stayed at home continuously perfecting his craft and developing his artistry under his now known stage name “Token.” Token began cultivating his fanbase at age 14 after releasing simple videos online of him rapping. What had started out as an outlet of expression soon became his passion. At the age of 10, Ben began putting melody to these lyrics and recording these poems as raps. At a young age Ben was introduced to hip-hop and by the age of six, began writing down his thoughts and emotions from events in his life and expressing himself through poetry. The tour will also feature Philly rapper Kur on selected dates. “YouTube Rapper” serves as the fourth single released off the album as he prepares to hit the road on his “Between Somewhere Tour,” which kicks off February 13 in New York at the Bowery Ballroom. Directed by Token and collaborator Ben Proulx, the video exudes the intense energy that both rappers bring when they attack the stage. What Black voices would you like to elevate?
TOKEN RAPPER HOW TO
It blows my mind to see a large amount of people interested in “Black culture” but not interested on how to save Black lives. What I’ve been most shocked to learn though is how many people don’t understand the real issues. I’ve learned about the slavery that continued for 80 years after abolishment that they called “convict leasing.” I’ve learned more about the Jim Crow laws and red lining and how long lasting those affects were. What have you learned since this movement started?

I think at this point the most impactful thing I can do is not only increase my knowledge on the statistics and history, but also try to open the minds of some of my younger supporters who we’re brought up in a more closed-minded household than mine. I made some posts about the issue, a couple including the importance of understanding white privilege, and I was honestly shocked to see some people who don’t understand the issue. As much as I felt passionate and educated on the topic before (being that I grew up in a household that has always spoken up against this issue) I knew I had much more to learn.
